Speaker 1
Good morning, everybody. I am Larry Watkinson with Blind Information Technology Solutions, and I’m going to be joined today with a couple of other folks. I’d like to welcome you here. I am going to have a question, and that is, what is your favorite springtime activity? Today, I’m joined with Marcy Dutti. Marcy, would you like to introduce yourself and

Speaker 2
maybe answer the question? Good morning, everyone. Thank you so much for being here. Welcome to Ask Bits for Saturday, April the 4th. And thank you so much to Mike for hosting us today and to Brad for streaming us today. My favorite springtime activity is benefiting from the wonderful garden that my husband has planted. He has planted bell peppers and now I get to pick them from the garden and cook them with my breakfast or with my soup or with my anything. And picking out the activity or the peppers from the garden is awesome.

Speaker 1
Oh, wonderful. I was going to introduce the host as well, but I’d like to see if they’d participate with the question that we have of the day. How about if we go to Michael first? Michael, what is your favorite springtime activity?

Speaker 3
You know, probably just getting outside and see what’s changed since winter has left.

Speaker 1
Yeah, because you guys have all that snow up there in Wisconsin, and so you probably do get some changes in what things look like after the winter. We do. How about you, Brad?

Speaker 4
I enjoy getting outside the longer days, having that air conditioner service, getting ready for the summer, all that stuff. No, seriously. Just the nice weather and, like I said, the longer days. It’s always nice.

Speaker 1
And that was kind of what I was going to say. I love the longer days. It is so nice. I just wish we could stay in springtime so we had the light. It’s so nice to have the light coming into the house. And I actually mowed our lawn for the first time last week. And so now that becomes a weekly chore. You cut it once and you’ve got to keep it going up here in the Northwest. That’s what we got. So without much further ado, I do want to sort of say to Michael and to Brad a big thank you. You know, this is a production process. I mean, I felt like I was actually back in the studio. You know, Brad was doing the countdown to the announcements and all that kind of stuff. And I actually felt like I was in the production studio getting ready to do things. You guys are surprised how much work is done by our host and the streamers in this organization. And a big thank you to them. And with that out of the way and done, Marcy, we were supposed to have Cliff with us. And I haven’t seen him. So I guess it’s you and I.

Speaker 2
That’s fine. And Brad has Mac knowledge. So we’re good there.

Speaker 1
We’re good there.

Speaker 2
Yeah, we are totally great there.

Speaker 1
All right. So why don’t we go ahead and take our first question of the morning there. And we’re going to go through, Michael’s going to call on you and then call the next person up. That way we can keep things flowing and stay within the hour. And those of you who have secondary questions, if we get to them, fine. But we’re going to focus on everybody at least getting the question out. Is that still the standard here, Marcy?

Speaker 2
It is indeed. But I wanted to share before we took our first question about the wonderful presentations that we have coming up at Blind Information Technology Solutions. On Tuesday the 7th, we’re having the people from HumanWare come and tell us all about the BrailleNote Evolve. So if you have questions about those presentations that are coming up, please send an email to us at ask at bits-acb.org so we can send you the registration link. Another one we have coming up is Nikki is going to be talking to us about Braille across platforms. So she’ll be talking to us about the Focus and the Chameleon and the Mantis and how they connect to a Windows computer. Pete at MacBytes has a presentation on Amadeus Pro and the way you can learn to edit using different programs on the Mac. So all of these, along with Ask Bits, are offered to us as part of Blind Information Technology Solutions. So please feel free to email us and learn more about these presentations.

Speaker 1
that’s wonderful yes we’re we’re a very busy group and don’t forget that we’re going to be virtual uh for the convention for the virtual presentations and we will also be present at the national conference in uh in missouri this summer and so we’ll have a booth there and we’re gonna have several classes going yeah so thank you marcy very much uh we’re getting programs that you all would like to be a part of. So why don’t we take our first question?

Speaker 5
All right.

Speaker 3
Okay. Up first is Deanna, then Malcolm. Deanna, you can go ahead and unmute. And good morning to you, Deanna.

Speaker 5
Good morning. Well, I’m not sure that you can give me a straight-up answer for this one. I am feeling terribly overwhelmed. my Windows 10 system worked really well with all my peripherals and everything until of course it didn’t and I had a Windows 11 laptop from computers to the blind but I never it was a Windows 11 But I never got comfortable with it. The keyboard was so compressed and my fingers kept hitting the wrong keys all the time. So I didn’t proceed very far with learning Windows 11 with it. I requested help from Voc Rehab and they sent me a Windows 11 machine, but they gave me someone that could configure everything together. But my system has never completely settled down and worked because I do so many things other than just my writing and going to Zoom meetings and email. I Zoom host for ACV and for bits.

Speaker 1
Deanna, what I need you to do is get to your specific question about how we can help you.

Speaker 5
My question is, Voc Rehab wants the computer back because they gave it to me with the understanding that I was working on a book and that my only additional income was for my writing. But my husband’s health took a severe downturn. And I’m scrambling to hold things together.

Speaker 1
So, Deanna, what I would suggest to you.

Speaker 5
I just don’t know what to do now.

Speaker 1
And I understand that, Deanna, if you would write to S-Bits, we can reach out to you and help you. It sounds like you do have a Windows 11 machine that you got from Computers for the Blind. And I think we can fix the keyboard issue by maybe getting a different keyboard that can plug into that particular machine. As far as voc rehab, we don’t have a role there and cannot become involved with that. But I think we can get you going on that Windows 11 machine. And that would be probably the best way for us to help you. Write to ask at bits. One of us will reach out to you and we can help you find the right keyboard. In fact, I know that Computers for the Blind actually sells a keyboard for around $10. And there’s another one they have that’s a little bit more in price that would help you. I use a keyboard, not the laptop keyboard. I use an additional keyboard because of exactly what you just described. So there is a solution for you there. And I also tell you, there’s not much difference between Windows machine, Windows 10 and Windows 11 in terms of operation. And I think we can help you. Marcy, do you have any thoughts? I don’t want you to represent computers for the blind. I want you to be Marcy.

Speaker 2
You read my mind. As soon as you said, my fingers are, you know, the keys are too close. I was always pressing the incorrect keys. Immediately, I thought, a USB keyboard, a Bluetooth keyboard, something that you’d feel comfortable with. That’s exactly what I thought. So good job, Larry.

Speaker 1
And that’s what I have right in front of me right now, Deanna.

Speaker 2
Okay.

Speaker 1
Okay. I wish you well, and I’m sorry that you’re having some problems. We can help you, though.

Speaker 5
Okay.

Speaker 1
Thank you. Okay. If you can’t write to Aspids, you can give us a call. that’s on the bottom of the website, give us a phone call and we will call you. In fact, I’m going to be working aspects today a little bit. So one of us will be around.

Speaker 5
Okay, thank you.

Speaker 1
Let’s take the next caller. Malcolm. Malcolm.

Speaker 2
How are you doing, Malcolm? First time caller or first time participant? I don’t think I’ve seen your name before.

Speaker 6
Well, for I think this, that’s one of my two questions I think I have is, I used to come into when it had iMute Presents.

Speaker 2
Uh-huh.

Speaker 6
And so I couldn’t find that anymore. So I heard this one a month or two ago, and I didn’t know how often it goes. So that’s my one question. Does this take the place of iMute Presents?

Speaker 2
So this is a place where you can ask technology questions, and we can do our best to find answers. And it takes place the first and third Saturday at this time.

Speaker 6
First and third. Okay, but do you know about iMute? Is that different?

Speaker 2
Yeah, I don’t think that that company… Well, check probably their website, I guess, at unmute.org.

Speaker 4
They stopped doing it, Marcy.

Speaker 2
They stopped doing it completely.

Speaker 4
Yeah, about a year ago. Yeah, it was called Unmute Presents. Yeah, Unmute Presents.

Speaker 2
Yes, exactly. But I saw Desiree do some things for them, so yeah.

Speaker 6
And then I guess the second question I have is I’m muted until you allow me to unmute.

Speaker 2
That’s correct.

Speaker 6
Had me scared because I’ve gone into Zoom meetings and I’ve been able to control video and audio or the microphone. But now here with this particular one, I won’t be able to control the microphone.

Speaker 2
Right. Well, you can unmute yourself, but you can only talk when we give you permission to do so because we’re in a webinar Zoom meeting.

Speaker 6
OK, well, I can’t find any control on my screen. I’m on an iPad, and when I touch it, the only controls I have is, oh, there it is now. Okay. Didn’t have the microphone before, and now it showed up. So if I click on that. And I think he just muted it. He just muted it. He just muted it. Yeah, I got it now. And if that microphone goes away, then I know it’s not going to pop up until you let me unmute.

Speaker 2
Exactly.

Speaker 6
Correct. Good enough, then I will mute and listen.

Speaker 2
Thank you for being here.

Speaker 1
And you should know, we did not replace unmute, but there was a time slot available for supporting people with technical questions. And we moved it to Saturdays and to kind of fill in that gap. When Michael Babcock approached BITS, which he’s a BITS member, he said there was going to be this slot opening where unmute was. And did we want to kind of fill some of that technical space? And so that’s what BITS did. So there is a little bit of a transition that occurred there that brought us into taking this time slot here, but we couldn’t do it during the week just because people’s work schedules. But the same concept is here in terms of answering all your questions. Next person.

Speaker 3
Angel, followed by area code 734.

Speaker 2
Which is Allison.

Speaker 3
Good morning, Angel. You’re unmuted.

Speaker 7
Yes. Now, first of all, this coming Friday, April the 10th, I’m going to be celebrating my 30th birthday. But before I do that, though, I want to answer the right-to-click question. I do have a very, very curious question. Now, first of all, I love Easter. And those who are celebrating Easter or the Passover, hopefully do it safely. Now, I spoke to my friend. His name is Deshaun. He does old school strategies in the community. Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. Eastern time. and I talked to him about computers for the blind and how I got it and he wants to get a computer for the blind and so unfortunately me and Deshaun cannot use email so when you get a chance at the end of this call not only give the email address but I think you should give the phone number for ask bits so in case people that can’t use email like me and Deshaun they can call you guys so So that would I can get it so I can give it to my friend, DeSean, so he can call you guys. So he can probably help me if you guys can help him to get a computer from Computers for the Blind.

Speaker 1
So he needs to actually communicate with Computers for the Blind directly. Bits is not the pathway for that. And so what we could do is get the number for Computers for the Blind, and that person can call to Computers for the Blind directly. And so we will make sure that that number is made available. And so I have, Marcy, would you happen to know the number? Yeah.

Speaker 2
It’s 214.

Speaker 7
Okay, 214.

Speaker 2
340.

Speaker 7
Okay, 214, 240.

Speaker 2
6328.

Speaker 7
Now, another thing I’d like to mention, 214, so before you repeat that number, I want to say that I got a computer for free. So the question is, could my friend, they should get one for free?

Speaker 1
I, Angel, I’m going to move on because I need you to call Computers for the Blind. That’s not what we do here. And just because we have an employee for Computers for the Blind here, we’re not going to do that here, Angel. So call Computers for the Blind. They’re open Monday through Friday and they have several programs available. Nine to six? So nine to six. So we’re not going to do that here. Let’s go ahead and take the next caller. Allison. Allison, good morning.

Speaker 8
Good morning. Is there a tech question, a question, icebreaker question this morning?

Speaker 1
There was. What is your favorite springtime activity?

Speaker 8
My favorite springtime activity, I also have a tech question too. My favorite springtime activity is sitting outside on my deck and listening to baseball and the birds. I love it. I love it. And although we are due to get some rain today, so I probably can’t do that today. My tech question is, I noticed that when I go on Freedom Scientific Zoom website to fill out the form for their webinars, I noticed that it auto-fills my first and last name. For some reason, it has my first name in the form three times, and it won’t let me delete all the three names out. How do I get it to do that?

Speaker 2
Are you in forms mode when you do that? Because it should allow you to edit it.

Speaker 8
So when you go to the first name, it makes a beep and reads my name three times. So I was just wanting to know how to delete it.

Speaker 2
So I wonder if you could just select it all with control A and then just type over it one time. Just type your name. Oh, okay. So select it all with control A and then just type your name. Because once text is selected, it’s deleted by what you type.

Speaker 8
Okay.

Speaker 2
So try that. Thank you very much. You’re welcome.

Speaker 8
Okay. So control A and just type over it. Yeah. Okay. Thank you.

Speaker 9
Frank, when I key up the computer and have to put my code in, it’s fine. Then I walk away and it goes in sleep mode. And I have to put code in again. Is there a way I can pick it so it doesn’t? There’s nobody else that uses a computer but myself.

Speaker 2
So, Frank, go ahead, Marcy. I was going to say, yes, there is a way. is there a way for you to write to me, send an email to us at ask? Because we can remote into your computer and fix those power options so that they don’t turn off.

Speaker 9
Okay. Yeah, I can do that. Okay.

Speaker 1
Yeah, I think, Frank, you actually wrote in to support or somebody with a similar issue. And we’re happy to remote in. That’s a real simple setting. It is. in your power management areas where it times out, like after one minute or two minutes, five minutes, and you can set that to never lock or never turn off. So that’s an easy, easy peasy fix.

Speaker 2
Okay. And with RIM, we can remote into your computer and fix those power options for you and make sure that it doesn’t turn off.

Speaker 9
Okay. I’ll send another message because you did answer mine about that. I did. Yeah. to put into Chrome. So it’s just a matter that I have to do it.

Speaker 1

  • So Frank, if you would leave your phone number as well in the email, we’ll just call you and reach out and we can actually do it right in the moment if you have time or put in your ask at bits, best times for you to be available.

Speaker 9

  • Okay, I will do. Thank you for your help.

Speaker 2

  • Thank you for being here.

Speaker 1

  • You bet, this is wonderful. Do you have another caller at this point or a hand raise? We do. Yusuf. Yusuf.

Speaker 10
My question is about, and forgive me if it sounds silly, I think it’s called markup language that allows us to, I guess, place bulletin or hashtags to make it a heading. So my question is, is there an app on a mobile device that I can use to write up markup and somehow have the screen reader tell me where the heading is? Is that possible in iOS for example? Or no, that’s only on a desktop machine?

Speaker 2
I’m sure it’s possible in iOS. Brad, do you have a clue?

Speaker 4
You should be able to write it in any text editor and then you’ll need to copy and paste it someplace. You should be able to use maybe notes and write it up, but you will need to then copy it and paste it into some place that’s going to utilize that markup text. You might want to do a search in your web browser of choice, something to the effect of using markdown language.

Speaker 2
Okay. I will too, Yusuf, if you write to me at ask, I’ll do some research also to find out which iOS apps you can use.

Speaker 10
That’s very kind of you. Absolutely, happy to. One last question. About the springtime favorite activity, is that something that we can write or is it only allowed to be shared in the audio Zoom meetings?

Speaker 2
So we were just using it as a way to get to know our participants better. So if you want to share what your favorite activity is, it’s totally good.

Speaker 10
Okay. So what I’m going to say, Michelle, kind of funny but it’s real so for thousands of years in egypt they celebrate both easter and springtime with something called shem and nassim and what that is the entire country would eat fish oh wow yeah and i’m currently visiting egypt for that purpose to be with family and um this fish is like prepared with like very special i don’t want to say secret recipe or Let’s say very special. So special that only like specialized seafood restaurants can do it. Like families are just rare to have someone that can do it. And so the entire country takes the day off. It’s an official government holiday to eat fish.

Speaker 2
Wow. Thank you for educating me. That is really cool.

Speaker 1
Yusuf, this is exactly why. In fact, I hosted, what, a few weeks ago, Marcy and I and a couple other folks. And we kind of did this kind of straw poll. The question was, do you really want to have icebreakers? Because we’ve heard people are not crazy about it. But it was overwhelming for the people that were there that weekend about they like these icebreakers. And, you know, many of us don’t get to experience these cultural experiences. And by doing that here, you know, we learned and gained some knowledge because many of us are never going to go to Egypt, but yet we know people who are from Egypt, et cetera. So, Yusuf, I want to thank you for teaching us something today inside that. So, if you have a final question, otherwise we’ve got to move on, my friend.

Speaker 10
No, I’ll just add one last comment about this occasion, and then I’ll let it go. So on that day in the morning, all the Christians would go to the church for Easter. And the Muslims would go for that early prayer service. And then they go to the restaurant and we’re like lions in the street waiting to get our fish. And then people out of the faith, they’re kind of lucky because they get to sleep in. They don’t get prayer.

Speaker 2
I was going to say for the people in the restaurants that have to cook the fish, they don’t get the day off.

Speaker 10
No, they wake up at 2 in the morning.

Speaker 2
But thank you, Yusuf, for being here. And please write to us at ask at bits-acb.org. And I’ll look for some iOS apps for Markdown.

Speaker 3
All right. Up next is Carla, followed by David.

Speaker 1
Good morning, Carla.

Speaker 11
Hello. And I wish you all a blessed Easter, Passover, whatever you’re celebrating, if not the blessed spring. And my favorite spring activity is observing Holy Week. To me, that’s just, it’s a reset. It’s a time to just reevaluate things, but also to celebrate and to mourn at the same time because, you know, you’re mourning the crucifixion and the betrayal, but then he’s risen. So that whole week, in fact, yesterday was all about Jesus for me. Good Friday always is. So that’s my favorite thing about spring.

Speaker 1
Wonderful.

Speaker 11
Oh, I really hope you can help me with this. Zoom is just getting zooier and zooier every day. And the two issues that I have with it is more, I call it junk. I know it’s useful to some people, but you know what they say about one person’s junk is another person’s treasure. When I go to schedule a meeting or do anything for that matter, all this quote unquote junk to me, you know, take notes, AI, this and that, and this and that pops up. And it takes me forever to cut to the quick and just get to where I can schedule and do things. Is there any way to make it skip all that stuff or to skirt to that stuff real fast? And my second question having to do with Zoom is, when I’m doing my homeschool classes, I leave my Zoom room open all day and I just give everybody the same link every week, you know. So I, you know, I generate a new week to keep, or a new link to keep the Zoom bombers out every week, but then I keep the room open all day, email the link to them. But lately, what’s been happening is when one class logs off and there’s just me left, it freezes. Zoom freezes. I can’t do anything with the computer. I can’t, you know, I can’t, move around. JAWS doesn’t work. Sometimes I have to reboot the whole computer and come back into the Zoom room. Those are my two issues. I didn’t know if anybody was experiencing anything like that or if you have any answers. I’m sure I’m not the only person that has trouble with Zoom. Brad?

Speaker 4
Yeah, Carla. If you’re the only one in a Zoom room, Zoom is going to detect you’re the only one in the room and it’s going to kill the room after I think it’s 40, 45 minutes. So that’s what’s happening there. To fix that, you might sign in on a second device, maybe a phone or call in on a phone if you don’t have a smart device. I believe you have a blind shell. I think there’s a Zoom app for the blind shell. But you can always just call in on a phone number And then your your Windows computer and your other device will be in the room and that should keep it open As far as all that other stuff Yeah, you’re not gonna like this because it’s it’s like one treating one poison for another You can sign into your zoom account on a web browser And you can navigate it and figure out how to turn a lot of that AI stuff and other features off you know disable them which you know navigating that zoom website there’s lots of stuff there but I find it if I ask chat GPT how to do what I want to do it usually gives me pretty good instructions so I’m sure you could ask you know how do I disable AI in my zoom account how do I disable whatever else it is you want to disable in your zoom account so you could try that but like i said you’re kind of

Speaker 11
trading one poison for another i understand that but the thing when this thing with the um computer

Speaker 1
freezes there’s no 45 minutes it’s instantaneous then she might you might have a power setting that is your computer correct yeah and i would um i mean carla we can remote into you just like we I’d mentioned to Frank. I think what you may have is, see, you can lock, your hard drive can be shut down, your monitor can be shut down. There’s like several power settings within the laptop or the PC that you’re using that if we look at those, that might in fact be what’s getting you. It’s your hard drive’s going into rest and it’s shutting things down. It could be a number of power settings And that’s the hidden secret that sometimes causes a machine. And the other thing is, is your machine heating up? And is it, that’s the hat. I mean, is there a lot of heat on the machine?

Speaker 11
No, no. In fact, the Zoom room stays open all night and everything’s nice and cool. And, you know, I have no problems like that. And this has just started happening.

Speaker 1
Right. And that’s what’s leading me to that there’s a power saying. Windows does updates. And sometimes Windows updates, power settings, power management, and energy, et cetera, even regardless of your default settings that you’ve moved them to, sometimes in the Windows update, they will terrorize you with a setting that you may not be aware of because they’re trying to help you save power and save money. Carla, write us at AskBits, and one of us could remote in and check those for you. Again, make sure you give us a phone number and probably best time to call you so that those that are volunteering their time can use their time very efficiently. So write in and we’ll help you out.

Speaker 3
Okay, up next is David, followed by Pamela.

Speaker 1
Good morning, David.

Speaker 12
Good morning. How are you?

Speaker 2
Doing well. Yourself?

Speaker 12
I think I’m all right.

Speaker 1
Your audio is great this morning. You’re nice and loud. Thank you.

Speaker 12
Springtime activity as barbecues and things like that. Yes. Barbecues and picnics. Yes. I want to answer a couple of questions if I can. Oh, please. Carla, I think you’re going to have better success on the web. I don’t have a shortcut way to get around it, but the web will be your easiest way to get around the app because a web page is more predictable than the Zoom app. The second one is, yes, there are several Markdown. This is for the previous, I think it was Yusuf, several Markdown apps on the iOS platform. I looked them up a few years ago. I probably could find a list. I’ll help you out, Marcy.

Speaker 9
Okay.

Speaker 12
Some other apps. But also in Notes, if you write typically with Notes and format it, you can export that in Markdown.

Speaker 2
I think that’s what Brad was saying, that he could use Notes and then export it. cool thanks

Speaker 1
so David after you’ve given us all this good technical advice and directions did you have a tech question today

Speaker 12
no the only thing I want to know is if anybody has tonight’s winning lottery numbers right

Speaker 3
I always do but I never win

Speaker 4
somebody coming up on stage here in clubhouse

Speaker 1
oh well why don’t we go ahead and take

Speaker 4
why don’t we take your clubhouse question

Speaker 13
to the stage jonna are you able to unmute good morning can you hear me we can okay my favorite activity is exactly what i’m doing right now i am sitting out on the my back deck with the sun shining and a breeze blowing the only thing that i wish were different is that i were at the beach I love the beach. Sometimes I put, when I can’t go to the beach, I put the sounds and I play ocean waves.

Speaker 2
I love it, Jenna. That’s awesome.

Speaker 1
That is wonderful.

Speaker 2
That’s using the imagination to the max. You’re out there and there’s the beach for you. I love it. My question is.

Speaker 1
What part of the country do you live in, Jenna?

Speaker 13
I’m in North Carolina.

Speaker 1
Oh, so you can be close to the beach if you want.

Speaker 13
Yep, yep. I just got to get somebody to drive me there. That’s all.

Speaker 1
Oh, yeah.

Speaker 13
Because I’m in Raleigh, which is the capital.

Speaker 1
Right.

Speaker 13
And every beach is like at least two hours sometimes through away from me.

Speaker 1
I was there after a hurricane when I was doing Red Cross work. And so I’ve been in the Raleigh-Durham area and actually got to go out to the coast taking materials out there. But yeah, so what’s your question?

Speaker 13
My question is, my husband uses the Merrill Lynch. It’s called My Merrill, and he has downloaded it onto his computer. It connects by the web, and he can view all of his Merrill Lynch. I don’t know if y’all know what that is. Stocks and that is stockbroker stuff. And what is happening is it comes up and he logs in, but then Jaws is saying that there is a splash page. And I don’t know what that is or if there is a command to get by that to get in the website. Have you guys ever heard of a splash page?

Speaker 2
so i know mary lynch is part of bank of america right i use bank of america’s website most of the time i don’t use the app the only time i use the app is on the ios

Speaker 13
yeah this is on the computer i’m trying to you know his desktop computer sure so he can go in there and review all of his account activities.

Speaker 1
So I know this is not going to answer your question, right? What I would do, do you have the, can you write in to ask at bits? And I’m happy to do some research, but have you guys called Freedom Scientific or whatever their name is this month?

Speaker 2
Vispero.

Speaker 1
Vispero, thank you. and write in and or call them and about that i’m wondering if what it is is if it’s a web page that’s being dropped in kind of that has no text and no value to it that um is kind of promoting

Speaker 2
an activity um i uh i might also suggest that you ocr the screen withdraws if you could do that

Speaker 1
I was just getting ready to go there. So Marcy, thank you because that’s exactly where I was going to go and see if it is in fact.

Speaker 2
Like a JAWS key space O, then S. You don’t think so?

Speaker 14
When I was working at Target, we used to have that splash page come up when we were trying to fill out a customer complaint on certain things that needed to be filled out. And it’s a page that just, it’s just there. and Jaws sees it but it doesn’t see if that makes sense. But OCR is not… You can try alt-tabbing it away from it and coming back but that worked for me a couple of times but it’s not a known success.

Speaker 13
No, it keeps popping up every time I log in to the website.

Speaker 1
Cliff had just… By the way, it’s Cliff that joined us. He had to stop at the attendance office to get a late admit slip. I did. I did. So we’re glad to have Cliff here. So I would suggest the alt tab that Cliff just mentioned to you and see if that works. I think that’s the best answer to give you. And we’re going to need to move on. I want to make sure that we get everybody in here. And I’m sorry that we don’t have an instant answer like Insta Breakfast.

Speaker 2
Okay. Thank you. Thanks for asking, Jenna.

Speaker 3
Pamela followed by Lynn. Good morning, Pamela.

Speaker 15
I’m on my iPad and I wear a hearing aid. And usually when I’m on the iPad in a Zoom meeting, it connects to the hearing aid. So it goes to the hearing aid. But for some reason today, it’s not doing that. And when I went to settings to check, well, I went to Moment, the app for the hearing aid. it says no hearing aid connected. And the hearing aid is on. So I have no idea. And my phone is off. Because a lot of times if it’s connected to two things, you know, there’s a problem. But my phone is completely off. So it should be connecting to the iPad and it’s not.

Speaker 1
Do you normally connect through Bluetooth? Oh, I do.

Speaker 15
Yeah.

Speaker 1
So what I do is go into my Bluetooth settings. And I would just make sure that on that Bluetooth, It’s not pairing. It’s what’s happening. And I would go right into your Bluetooth settings. Marcia, you started to say something. I’m sorry. No, that’s it.

Speaker 15
That’s exactly what I was going to say. Go ahead. Okay, I’ll check to see if Bluetooth is on. And then I have one other question. I was on my iPhone yesterday and the day before, and I was in my email, and I wanted to move the email into a folder. You know, they have folders saved with different names. And when I would click on the folder at the bottom of the screen, it would not give me the list of the folder so I could place it. It wouldn’t let me do it. And I don’t.

Speaker 1
Are you a voiceover user?

Speaker 15
No, I’m not.

Speaker 1
I’m low vision.

Speaker 15
Yeah.

Speaker 1
So you do know that in your email that basically you kind of see your email twice in Apple. So what you need to do is scroll all the way, go all the way from left to right. And then what you’ll do is you have to open up the folders by striking on it. And that will open all of your folders underneath. Otherwise, you have the folders closed and you’re not going to be able to do anything with them. So you want to strike all the way over from the left to the right to where you find the other where it says like Larry at iCloud. You’re going to see that possibly twice. And you want to then open the window where all the folders are, but the tapping on it.

Speaker 15
Did I say that the right way, Marcy and Cliff and Brad?

Speaker 1
Did I say that the right way?

Speaker 4
Yeah, I think so. Your folders may be collapsed is the term. Okay. And I think if you swipe on it, I’m not familiar. To be honest with you, I never use an iPhone without voiceover turned on. But I believe Larry is correct. go to it and swipe from left to right. I think that will expand the account that you want. You have more than one account on your phone, right? Right. Or maybe just one, but it could still be collapsed. Okay. Thank you.

Speaker 1
You bet. And if that doesn’t work, write in and we’ll call you. My wife is low vision. And so we can come up with an answer with you, but it behaves pretty much in the same manner. Just that some of them we have to double tap on, and on yours, you just single tap. Okay. Give it a try. Next caller, please. Lynn. Lynn, good morning.

Speaker 16
Good morning. My favorite springtime activity is working in my garden.

Speaker 1
Awesome. I will give you my address at the end of the show, and you can send me some wonderful vegetables.

Speaker 16
Oh, and only if you come and work in my garden with me. That’s all.

Speaker 1
Just tell me where you’re going to get them.

Speaker 16
I could use the help, too.

Speaker 1
What’s your question?

Speaker 16
So my question is, I have a Mac and a PC, and the PC is my secondary computer. I don’t know as much about that as I know about the Mac, and I don’t have as much help for that as I do the Mac, because I have someone who helps me with that. But my question is, I was setting my Windows 11, my relatively new Windows 11 PC up for the last several months, and having several issues. But one of them is that if I leave it too long, I get the lock screen. And I thought that it was because of my default power settings. So I changed everything to never. And I’m still getting the lock screen. And it’s a pain because it’s hard to navigate. So I know that the only way you can uninstall that, the lock screen, is through registry stuff. And I don’t want to necessarily do that. So what can I do to make that easier for myself?

Speaker 2
When you made your changes to Never, did you actually go to the Save Changes button?

Speaker 16
I thought I did, but I’ll check that again.

Speaker 1
Stay away from the registry.

Speaker 16
No, no, I don’t know enough about that.

Speaker 1
I won’t do that. Please, please. No, I won’t.

Speaker 2
Go ahead, Brad.

Speaker 1
Brad, go ahead, Brad.

Speaker 4
You, believe it or not, even though there’s settings, you still have a control panel. And if you press the Windows key, you’ll be in a search field, type Control Panel, and press Enter. Once control panel is open, start pressing the letter. Well, hopefully, maybe set on categories. Ah, that’s true. Which category is it in, Marcy? I’m looking for power options. I always change mine to, I think you get categories, large icons, small icons. It doesn’t matter whether you’re using large or small. But categories, you’ve got to figure out what category it’s in. But what we’re looking for is power options.

Speaker 8
Okay.

Speaker 4
And Power Options allows you to set a scheme. And forgive me, I can’t remember what exactly it’s labeled. But there’s a way to go in there and adjust whether or not it goes to sleep. Right. And I have my Windows computer set. You know, you can tell it what to do when it’s on battery or what to do when it’s on power.

Speaker 16
That’s what I thought I was changing the other day, though.

Speaker 1
Yeah, well, the thing, Brad, I think it’s Windows tradition or classic or something like that.

Speaker 4
It’s in control panel. Yes. And you want to, like I said, you need to find power options. And it is in there. And you can tell it to never go to sleep, especially when it’s on power. And it won’t do a lock. It won’t lock. It won’t. It’ll just sit there. And if you press a key, it’ll wake up and you’ll be right there on the desktop. Okay.

Speaker 1
All right. Great.

Speaker 4
Or wherever you left it.

Speaker 1
And, of course, Cliff will tell you, just go ahead and put that in the closet and just stick with the Mac.

Speaker 16
Yeah. It’s tempting. There’s a couple of apps that I like that are on that. I can’t get them on the Mac, unfortunately. Otherwise, I would do that because Windows is kind of a pain. But, anyway, I know you have other colors. Thank you.

Speaker 1
All right. And if that doesn’t work, be sure you write in to us. askatbits-acb.org. Please feel free. That service is available to you.

Speaker 16
Okay, thank you. Appreciate it. Thanks, Lynn. Next call.

Speaker 3
I think David had something to say first.

Speaker 12
I was just going to say check your screensaver settings because it might be blanking the screen to the lock screen. Exactly.

Speaker 2
Mike, can you give Tyson permission to talk, please?

Speaker 3
Sure. Give me a second. Can we take the hand up for you? Okay, so we got Rosanna and then Eric. Rosanna, you can unmute. Hi, Rosanna.

Speaker 2
Yeah. How are you today? What? How are you today? Thank you for being here.

Speaker 17
I’m doing good.

Speaker 2
Excellent.

Speaker 17
So my favorite spring activity is being able to listen to the birds. There you go. And my question, so I recently had to change my Apple password. and I tried this once but either I was too slow or something but what is the best way to enter your information on an Apple Watch? Is there some way that I can do that on the phone instead of on the watch?

Speaker 1
Because that takes longer. There is. You can go in accessibility settings and you can find the area where you can mirror your watch or you can do a lot of stuff on just the watch app itself what are you trying to do specifically on the watch so uh on the watch it

Speaker 17
keeps asking me for my password for my for my uh apple id and then after that it wants to uh send the code to another device that I have to enter on the watch again.

Speaker 1
Isn’t there a setting, Marcy and Cliff and Brad? Isn’t there a setting to where you can actually…

Speaker 4
It should be signed in as soon as you set up the watch. You set it up from your phone. It’s asking you on your watch for your Apple ID and password?

Speaker 17
For the password of my Apple ID. And then when I enter that, it wants to send the code to my other device that I have to enter on the watch.

Speaker 4
It sounds to me like you’re setting up the watch for the first time. But you already have it set up?

Speaker 17
Yeah, they set it up for me at the store.

Speaker 4
Oh, that’s the problem. Why don’t you unpair the watch and then repair it? I don’t think they didn’t set up your watch properly. I would unpair the watch and start over. Because if you pair it from your iPhone, it is going to grab all that information off your iPhone.

Speaker 17
The reason is that means because I had to change my Apple password.

Speaker 4
That could be it too, but I would unpair the watch and then repair it, and that should fix this.

Speaker 1
Yeah, because she changed her password, right, Brad? So Brad is on the right path because your watch is going to match your phone if you actually just treat that watch like it’s a brand new watch to you, wouldn’t you do that, Brad? And then it would just synchronize with it.

Speaker 4
Well, yeah, I don’t know. Because it’s not communicating with your Apple ID. How long have you had the watch?

Speaker 17
I just got it recently.

Speaker 4
Okay, good. Then you have nothing to lose. It’s not like you got a lot of data. Just go into the watch app on your phone, and if it recognizes your watch, unpair it.

Speaker 9
That sounds complicated.

Speaker 4
And once you unpair it, it should prompt you to set it up. It’ll detect your phone and then set it up again. It’s really pretty simple. It’s going to ask you to point the phone at it, but that’s difficult to do. Right. But that’s difficult to do because there’s another option. And the phone will detect the watch. But there’s an option on there to enter a code. And a code will appear on the watch. And you can then type that into the watch app on the phone is open in pairing mode. And so you can skip that little point the camera at the watch and hold the little QR code or whatever it’s showing in the circle. That’s hard to do when you can’t see it. But if you swipe around the screen on your iPhone, it’s going to say get a code instead or something to that effect. And you’ll be able to set it up pretty easily. And just start over. That’s your problem. Start over.

Speaker 1
And what I would do is you could call Apple’s support. Do you know about Apple’s? I won’t waste your time with that.

Speaker 4
I’d just unpair it and start over.

Speaker 1
Right. That sounds harder. But we all have different.

Speaker 2
Yeah, it may be a little bit difficult for her. This is probably why she had it done at the store.

Speaker 1
Yeah.

Speaker 2
Right.

Speaker 1
And we all have different levels of technical skills. And so it’s very easy to set up a watch. Yeah, it is.

Speaker 3
Larry, I just want to let you know that it’s nine to the top of the hour. And following Tyson, we have three hands.

Speaker 1
Okay, let’s move through. You can write to Ask Bits or I would call Apple Support or go back to the store. Next person, Tyson.

Speaker 18
Tyson. So just a real quick couple of questions because I know you want to get to hands or a couple of comments. Going all the way back to Carla. Carla, I would also try updating Zoom. You may be caught by an update bug, especially if it just started happening where it’s not responding when you go to a single person in the room. So to the last caller also, I would suggest shutting down your watch and restarting it, and it might repair and pick back up your new ID settings. The third one is for the person with the screen issues with a lock. you can go into your power settings as well through control panel but also through windows x and down arrow a couple times and you’ll have a power option just press enter and it’ll take you into those make sure you’re checking this that you’re setting both plugged in and on battery settings and i haven’t seen it i haven’t seen an apply settings button in there for a long time i thought they were on the fly once you change them you can just alt f4 and i thought i saw save

Speaker 2
settings button. I have not seen that in a while.

Speaker 18
But anyways, those are my tips. Yeah, thank you.

Speaker 2
Those are good tips. Windows X is great. Yeah.

Speaker 1
Okay, let’s get to the last three call hands so we can wrap it up here, folks. Eric.

Speaker 19
Eric. I have a question. I received an email from Hadley and I’d like to download it to my desktop. I downloaded to downloads but I can’t get up to the desktop.

Speaker 1
Oh, so

Speaker 19
it’s an application or is it just just that they sent an email after their program and there’s a thing on there. There’s a reason why I want to save it. There’s instructions when I get the e-reader from the National Library Service. There’s instructions how the set up the humanware, you know, device.

Speaker 2
So they just send instructions. It’s just an email containing instructions. Is that correct?

Speaker 19
No, there’s more one thing on this email. So there’s a recording and there’s the, about the humanware thing on it too. It’s always an email sent out to everybody.

Speaker 2
And what are you using for email? uh google so gmail the gmail website yeah okay because what i would say is i would put it in a folder and then save it for when you needed it um attached files can be saved to your desktop or can be saved to anywhere and everywhere you need them so in other words i can just just rather than

Speaker 19
put it on the desktop i can just put in a folder and it’s pulled out of the folder when i need it

Speaker 2
exactly oh okay any file that you want to attach to your desktop you can you can copy that for that like that recording you can put that on your desktop yeah and if you want i can totally rim in with you on chat and make that happen and that’s the other thing is let’s come to chat

Speaker 1
if you have those kind of issues and we can remote into you we set up like four to four to seven rooms in there and that is a good place to go on on friday nights and saturday nights uh we start at 8 o’clock East Coast time, 5 o’clock West Coast time. It’s a great place, and we can remote in and help you. It’s a service we provide, whether you’re a Bits member or not. During chat, we help everybody. Next caller.

Speaker 3
And followed by Sandra.

Speaker 1
And I think that Sandra will be our last one.

Speaker 3
Yep.

Speaker 20
Good morning, everybody. Happy Easter. And, gosh, I always enjoy this call. I just wanted to, well, my favorite activity, one of my favorite, is being outside and trying to go to some music festivals. That’s what I love about Scrum. All right. Yeah. Oh, to the lady who called about Bank of America, I’m a Bank of America customer. And this site is always cluttered with, I use the app, and it’s always cluttered with Merrill Lynch stuff. So, I mean, that’s just the nature of the beast. I’ve been fighting with them since the fall about their website. Every time they upgrade, it is not accessible to me. I cannot do bill pay. I cannot. So they know they’re going to get a call from me. And then they change it.

Speaker 1
And I’ve got about three minutes before we’ve got to cut. I want to get the other caller. What can we do for you?

Speaker 20
Well, I just wanted to comment about Bank of Bank of Bank. Oh, I’ve got a lot of things I need help with. I need the right to ask and get that going. Thanks so much.

Speaker 1
And you know you can come in to chat where we see you often.

Speaker 20
I’ll be there.

Speaker 1
That’s a great place for us to help you. So join us in chat and happy Easter. That’s first one, Sandy.

Speaker 3
Sandra, that’s the last one.

Speaker 21
Hi, guys. I’ve got an issue with FaceTime. So I use an iPhone SE 2022 if that helps. And I find that I can receive FaceTime calls, but I can’t make them. unless I’m so I’ve tried FaceTime itself I’ve tried going into contacts um the only thing that seems to work is if I’ve sent a text to somebody and then I can sort of FaceTime them from within messages but one of the jobs I have the the policy is to hide your ID um so I can’t really do that in FaceTime but I can appear as an email address so if I sent someone a text my phone number would show so I don’t really have that option in in one of the jobs I have so just wondering what is wrong with FaceTime. I’ve gone into the settings in the apps themselves because a suggestion was made to me that the default phone app or the default something app, you know, set to FaceTime, set to phone, I’ve tried all of those options. So any ideas would be welcome at this point.

Speaker 1
Is it your personal phone or is it a company phone?

Speaker 21
It’s a personal phone. I don’t really have a company phone.

Speaker 1
Okay. The reason I was asking is because companies can put their own profile sometimes if it’s a that could be doing that. Brad or Cliff?

Speaker 14
My suggestion is to make sure that when you’re going into the contact of the person that you’re double tapping on make FaceTime call, because there is an option instead of the phone number to say contact point to the say call FaceTime, FaceTime video, FaceTime audio. As it relates to calling directly from the FaceTime app, You’re not alone there because I have that issue too. I don’t even use the FaceTime app and I do exactly what you already do. I go to the contact of the text message and make the call from there. Or I go to call history and open up the contact card from there and double tap on FaceTime video or audio, whichever one I want. So that’s where I’m going.

Speaker 21
Yeah, I found when I go into contact or FaceTime itself and there’s the video option and then opening the video. And then FaceTime isn’t an option. it just says FaceTime, but the other ones have buttons like Teams, button, WhatsApp, button.

Speaker 14
Well, when you do video, the thing that it’s looking for is first, it wants you to choose a camera, then make the call.

Speaker 21
How do you do that?

Speaker 14
It’ll say front-facing camera or back-facing camera. You have to double-tap which one you want and then place the call.

Speaker 21
Oh, right. I will try that. Thank you so very much.

Speaker 1
And if that don’t work, Apple can share screens with you and they can look at your settings with you and you can call Apple’s technical support and they can share screens and they can very easily. It’s tough because we cannot rim into you and help you with settings on those types of devices on the phone. So your option would be there.

Speaker 14
You can’t rim, Larry, but there is a share screen option and get permission to control your screen because I do it with my daughter all the time. That would just be up to the user to give you that permission.

Speaker 1
Let’s have you go through that real quick If we can before we hang We have time Michael

Speaker 3
Yeah we got about a minute

Speaker 14
Yeah I’ll come in and chat tonight And we’ll talk about it Larry

Speaker 1
Okay great Marcia do you want to close us out

Speaker 2
Well I want to thank everyone for being here today Because we couldn’t have this call without you Thank you Mike for hosting us Thank you Brad for streaming us And please join us again on April 18th For Ask Bits

Speaker 1
And I want to thank Marcia for leading this Great crew
