Hello everyone, I’m Kayla Bentas. I am here today, Saturday, March 14th, doing a Basics with BITS training on Windows updates and Microsoft Store downloads. So we want to do a couple of things, but to start, I want to say we are part of Blind Information Technology Solutions, BITS for short. We’d love all of you who are not members yet to please join us. So join, you would want to be part of our announce list so you can know what’s going on within our organization and to do that it would be announced the plus sign subscribe at bits.groups.io. And you’ll also want to go to joinbits.org and sign up as an annual or lifetime member. Our Our annual memberships are $20 a year, and our lifetime membership is $200 for lifetime. So now we’ll begin. So I’m gonna show you how to keep your computer up to date. And the two biggest important things are your Windows system, your computer system, and Microsoft Store that contains all of the Microsoft apps that are in your computer and keeping them up to date. So, I am going to start with Windows updates. So, I am going to press Windows I to get to settings.
Computer
Windows I, settings, press space to activate the menu, then navigate with arrow keys, setting.
Kayla
And now I’m going to tab down twice so that I’m in the settings menu.
Computer
On your local account button, home, one of 12, to move.
Kayla
And so there’s 12 items. So now I’m going to press the end key.
Computer
And Windows Update, 12 of 12.
Kayla
And here we are, Windows Update. So I am going to press enter here and then I’m going to tab about two times
Computer
to check for updates. Enter Windows Update, Windows Update, updates available to Windows Update button. Install all button to activate. Actually in this case it
Kayla
looks like I do have something to install so I’m gonna press space bar on
Computer
here and it’s gonna start installing. Space, list box, hula-packer-usb-2/10/2017-12. So it looks like it finished.
Kayla
So now what I’m going to do is I’m going to go back up to Windows Updates so we can kind of start from that point in the menu.
Computer
Check for up Windows Up Windows Update 12 of 12 to move to Enter.
Kayla
And I’m going to tab down twice to check for updates.
Computer
Windows Update button. What? Check for updates button to add.
Kayla
I’m going to press Enter.
Computer
Enter “Listbox Hula-packer” Anyone likes to give some verbosity with it? Give it a minute. Updates available to download. Last checked colon today, 6.10 p.m. One update pending download. Pending download. Downloading one update. Downloading -100% Installing one update. Installing -0% Updates available. Completed. You’re up to date.
Kayla
So when there’s an update, as you heard, you will hear that information. The download status and also the installation status. When it’s done, you can Shift-Tab up to see what was installed, which is what I’ll do right now. I Shift-Tab up about once or twice.
Computer
Check for updates button to activate.
Kayla
Maybe not, okay. I’m not gonna Shift-Tab ’cause it didn’t bring me down to where I thought. So I’m gonna Tab down.
Computer
List box, hula-packer-usb-2/10/201712 hours, zero minutes, and zero seconds, am-441-2402-1741, one of one, two moved.
Kayla
So it downloaded one update, so we are all good. So a couple of things in your Windows update you do want to check and make sure they are on, so that way your computer stays updated all time, so you don’t have to keep coming to this area once a week and having to check for updates, which can be a lot to do. So to do automatic updates, when you get to this point where it has check for updates and what’s been installed, if it shows anything of that sort, you’re gonna tap once and you’ll hear a checkbox.
Computer
- [Narrator] More options. Be among the first to get the latest non-dash security updates, fixes, and improvements as they roll out. Learn more link to activate press enter. Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available button on be among the
Kayla
So the first one was a learn more button so you could always press enter on that one and be able to learn what types of updates it would do. So what it will do is any additional Microsoft updates that won’t initially update through the Microsoft Store, but also security updates that Windows pushes through. Those will come through here and it just, this checkbox, which I, when I tabbed one more time, it brought me to the checkbox to turn this on. And when I have this on, what it does is it pushes those extra updates, security updates, the, they call them,.NET framework type updates. So things for your system to work better and for security purposes as well, they get pushed through. So I’m also going to tab down a couple to advanced options.
Computer
Pause updates, update history, advanced options, advanced options button.
Kayla
And it’s a button so I’m going to press space bar.
Computer
Space, advanced options, receive updates for other Microsoft products button on.
Kayla
So, receive product updates. So this I always keep on, again, to make sure all products that I have in terms of software on my computer stay up to date through the system. And then I’m going to tab once more and there’s going to be another checkbox that you’ll want to make sure you have on.
Computer
Get me a two-day button on. Restart as soon as possible left bar and even during active hours right bar and to finish updating and notify me 15 minutes before restarting so I can make sure this device is on and plugged in
Kayla
to activate press. So this makes sure that your device stays updated. There’s going to be another checkbox coming up that will make it so that it has to notify you if it doesn’t update in the background. It has to notify you that a restart needs to be done and it will ask restart now or restart later when those kind of pop-ups come up on the computer. So I’m gonna tab here once more.
Computer
Download updates over metered connections button off.
Kayla
You want this off as long as you’re running on Wi-Fi, you don’t wanna have to use a metered connection. It is a little bit slower, but you definitely wanna use Wi-Fi. So you wanna make sure that download using metered connection is off.
Computer
Notifying me when a restart is required to finish updating button on.
Kayla
So this is the notification check box that you want to have on and it will notify you once the download and installation are complete saying that a restart is required. Would you like to restart now or would you like to restart later? And it usually has two buttons that you want to press on. Okay, so now I’m going to tab two more times, I believe, to optional updates. That’s another thing that’s good because what it does is it updates your drivers. So if you have monitors, for example, it will update the drivers to your monitors. If you have, just in general, your HP system or your Dell system or any of that kind of thing, type of system they will have updates through optional updates for those type of system updates.
Computer
So I’m going to tab twice to optional. Active hours show more setting additional options,
Kayla
optional updates, optional updates button to activate. So I’m going to press space bar, space,
Computer
optional updates, driver updates, left bar and one right bar and show more. So there’s a driver
Kayla
updates here. So I’m going to expand it by pressing space bar.
Computer
Space expanded. And then I’m going to tab once. List box HP Incorporated software component driver update left burn one 8543 680. It looks like I have an HP driver in
Kayla
which is sounds about right. I have an HP laptop. So this is going to update the HP driver for my system. So I’m going to press spacebar because this is a it’s like a checkbox or radio button. So I’m going to press spacebar to select it. Space checked. And then I’m going to press tab once to download and install.
Computer
Install selected updates left per in one right per in download and install button to activate
Kayla
So now I’m going to press space bar and it’s going to start the download and installation.
Computer
Space, get help, get help link, to activate press enter. Windows update, one update pending download. Download and install all button, to activate press space bar. List box, HP incorporated. Software component driver update left bar in 1, 8, 5, 4, 3, 6, 8, 0 right bar in 1 of 1. To move to an item press the arrow keys. Downloading 1 update, downloading -0%, downloading -1%, downloading -3%, downloading -7%, updates available, installing -99%, your up-to-date completed.
Kayla
So now I’m all up to date. So that is how you do your Windows updates. and how to also make sure that your computer can be updated automatically without you having to come in every week and having to check for updates. So now I am going to move over to Microsoft Store Downloads and show you how to update all of your apps that you have on your computer quickly and easily. I’m going to press the Windows key and come into the search bar.
Computer
Search box edit.
Kayla
And I’m going to type the word store.
Computer
Set visual studio code app, press right to view options, Kayla dot bente set gmail dot com, Microsoft Store system, press right to view options. One of seven.
Kayla
So it said Microsoft Store System. So I’m going to press enter here and it’s going to open Microsoft Store.
Computer
Store, enter. Microsoft Store, Microsoft Door Button.
Kayla
So now I’m going to tab about four times.
Computer
Search, search user profile, home, one if I, downloads, updates available.
Kayla
And I end up on downloads. Sometimes it will say what’s new, and if I end up on that, I just down arrow once to downloads and sometimes that does happen, but in this case I didn’t have to so I’m going to press enter on downloads
Computer
Enter downloads updates available updates and downloads check for updates button to activate
Kayla
And it automatically puts focus on check for updates so I’m going to press spacebar and it’s going to start checking for any updates and automatically it’ll start to install some of them, but I will show you next steps in a few seconds.
Computer
Space, checking for app updates. Check for updates was completed.
Kayla
So my updates have been completed in terms of the check, so I’m going to tab twice.
Computer
Managed by the Microsoft Store’s update all link to activate press…
Kayla
Update all and I’m going to go…
Computer
Installing colon…
Kayla
Enter.
Computer
Enter.
Kayla
When Microsoft Store itself updates, it actually closes automatically, but then it reopens. Unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you that it’s closing, so you usually will be brought to “Installing colon for” the screen that you were on previous. Schedule button.
Computer
Return to meeting button. Left brace call space. Zoom meeting. Task switching. Zoom worked. Screen sharing meeting. My notes.
Kayla
Microsoft Store has now reopened. Unfortunately, I had to alt tab over to where it was.
Computer
Microsoft Store.
Kayla
Now I’m tabbing down to see what there are for updates.
Computer
Microsoft More Places to Play with One Ad. Musicstreet, CME Most, CLA Me Abco, More. Search. User Pro…
Kayla
Okay. Now I’m at the beginning when you open up Microsoft Store. So I’m going to go back to downloads.
Computer
Home. One of five. Downloads. Updates available. Enter. Downloads. Updates available. Updates and downloads. Check for updates button. Managed by the Microsoft.
Kayla
Now I’m going to tab down to update all. Update all link. To enter. And press enter. And I’m going to tab once more. And it’s going to show a list of what’s being updated currently. Microsoft Sticky Notes, downloading.
Computer
One of two, update of Microsoft Sticky Notes, update available. One of one, update all link, to enter. Microsoft Sticky Notes, downloading. One of one, Microsoft Sticky Notes, 370.
Kayla
And so while it’s downloading, it kind of gives you all the steps. It will announce what’s happening. I just keep pressing Ctrl to kind of keep it quiet. Eventually it will say “recently updated” when all the updates are done. Which will probably be in a minute or two.
Computer
Check for recent updates, Microsoft.
Kayla
There we are.
Computer
“Window Microsoft sticky notes modified moments ago 1 of 12.”
Kayla
And so this list will show you what apps were updated and when. So in this case, Microsoft sticky notes, you know, a couple of minutes ago. So it really tells you, you know, what’s there. to this. So it does tell you all the different apps and when they were updated last. So that is the simplest and best way to keep everything up to date on your system between the Windows updates and the Microsoft Store downloads. I hope this helps all of you and I hope you ask questions as you get to understand how all this works. Thank you.
